SuperDielectrics today announces that it is rebranding to ‘HoriZn’ (“the company”). The step marks a new chapter for the company as it moves from pioneering research into developing a new generation of ultrafast zinc batteries designed for the power demands of the AI era.
The company’s new name aligns the business with its key market – the emerging role of zinc batteries for energy storage globally. With “Zn”, the periodic symbol for zinc, at its heart, the name reflects the role the element plays in the company’s next stage of growth as it drives towards its first battery deployment at a customer site, and then on to manufacture, and a new horizon for battery technology: safer, more sustainable energy storage designed for the changing power demands of the future.
Alongside the rebrand, HoriZn has relocated to a new office and laboratory facilities at The Press, situated in a dedicated science and innovation campus in Foxton, Cambridge on a key transport route, offering direct access between London and Cambridge. This strategic location will support HoriZn to attract and retain talent, providing convenient commuting routes from both cities. The Press also offers the opportunity for HoriZn to build a co-located pilot production facility, starting as soon as next year, helping to meet the rising demand for energy storage that can meet the power demands driven by AI.
The technology underpinning HoriZn is based on a proprietary polymer platform. Since its founding, the company has rapidly evolved following the discovery of a remarkable interaction between its suite of polymer separators and a zinc-based electrolyte. This breakthrough has enabled HoriZn to advance to an entirely new class of high-performance zinc battery, combining ultrafast charging and discharging, enabling the battery to smooth power fluctuations and operate without the danger of fires caused by thermal runaway.
Commenting on the announcement, Jane Hunter, CEO of HoriZn said: “I am delighted to lead HoriZn through this exciting phase as the company starts to deploy batteries with customers for testing in preparation for building out a pilot production line. Our expertise in polymer science has led to a timely breakthrough, at a point in time where we expect to see novel battery chemistries emerging to address gaps that lithium-ion cannot meet. The HoriZn team is scaling the business and technology at pace as we work to make our unique battery commercially available in time to meet this market need.”
Earlier this year, HoriZn had its technology independently tested and its superior cell performance confirmed by UK defence and security company QinetiQ. The technology outperformed both standard and next-generation lithium-ion cells across safety, cycle life, and charge and discharge speed in high power applications, making it a competitive solution for power quality needs in AI data centres, when scaled to mass manufacture.
About Horizn
HoriZn is a Cambridge-based deep tech company which has developed an advanced zinc battery technology with the potential to meet high power needs and fix power quality problems in commercial and industrial use cases. With ultrafast charge and discharge capability and robust performance in the face of power spikes and slumps, HoriZn’s internationally patented technology is based on a novel separator which uses advanced material innovation, providing intrinsic safety advantages, including no risk of thermal runaway and tolerance of abnormal operating states. The battery uses widely available raw materials with no critical minerals and more straightforward recyclability than most current commercial batteries.
